The SAMHSA 2021-2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) revealed model-based estimates of drug use at the state level. Specifically focusing on the past-year marijuana use among the 12–17 age group, the survey ranked the top 10 states by their legalisation status of recreational marijuana. The states with the highest prevalence included New Mexico at 19.24%, Nevada at 15.94%, and Alaska at 15.00%. Notably, nine out of the ten states with the highest youth marijuana use had legalised recreational marijuana.
According to the report, the legalisation of recreational marijuana is linked to higher rates of use among youth. This increase is attributed to the normalisation of the drug, reduced risk perceptions, and greater availability in these states. The issue is projected to worsen if marijuana is reclassified as a Schedule 3 drug. The report urges individuals to contact Congress and the President to oppose the rescheduling of marijuana.
