Friday, 13th December 2024, marks Welsh Overdose Awareness Day, an important initiative to shed light on overdose prevention and address the challenges linked to drug-related overdoses in Wales. The day encourages education on harm reduction measures and offers practical actions to save lives.
One key intervention being promoted is the use of Naloxone, a life-saving medication that can temporarily reverse opioid overdoses. According to Public Health Wales, “Naloxone was used in 303 overdose events in Wales last year, helping to prevent many deaths”. Through a dedicated Click and Deliver Service, residents in Wales can order free Naloxone kits to ensure the medication is widely accessible.
The campaign also emphasises sharing the ‘Blueprint for a more equal and prosperous Wales for people who use substances,’ a plan advocating harm reduction strategies that could minimise the risk of overdoses and related fatalities.
Supporters are encouraged to use the hashtag #WOAD24 and access a range of bilingual social media posts to help raise awareness on their own platforms. This united effort aims to promote harm reduction, mitigate overdose risks, and build a safer future for communities across Wales.
