Vaping Damages Lungs and Heart Faster Than Cigarettes, Researchers Find

Young people who vape are developing vaping lung damage far sooner than cigarette smokers typically show comparable injury. New research from the University of Alberta tracked 20 e-cigarette users in their early 20s over three years. All had standard clinical lung tests that appeared normal. Yet detailed analysis found something those tests missed entirely.

Around one million Canadians vape regularly. Moreover, e-cigarettes have long been marketed as a low-risk alternative to tobacco. Still, this study challenges that claim directly.

Hidden Signs of Vaping Lung Damage

None of the study participants had ever smoked traditional cigarettes or cannabis. Researchers asked them to exercise at an intensity roughly equivalent to a moderate walk. The results, however, were striking.

Michael Stickland, professor of pulmonary medicine at the University of Alberta and a lead researcher, described the findings clearly. His team observed breathlessness far beyond what you would expect from a 22 or 23-year-old during low-intensity exercise.

Detailed testing revealed reduced blood flow, impaired heart function, and lower exercise tolerance. Standard lung function tests showed nothing unusual. Yet the gap between what routine tests detected and what deeper analysis uncovered is what makes these findings so significant.

“What was quite surprising is these 23-year-old individuals had normal lung function, yet they showed marked exercise intolerance and greater breathlessness,” Stickland said.

Why Young Adults Face Greater Risk

The lungs do not fully mature until around age 25. Therefore, vaping lung damage sustained during the late teens and early 20s may interfere with development at a critical window. Stickland pointed to the known risks of early toxin exposure. “We now know that early-life exposure to toxins can impair lung growth and predispose people to future lung disease,” he said.

Many young people who would never have smoked cigarettes now regularly inhale e-cigarette aerosols. In fact, around one million Canadians currently vape, and a significant proportion are young people with no prior history of tobacco use. “Teens and young adults who don’t normally use traditional cigarettes are now vaping or using these electronic cigarettes,” Stickland noted.

Furthermore, the speed at which damage appears is what distinguishes e-cigarette lung harm from the typical tobacco timeline. Injury was detectable far earlier than researchers would ordinarily expect in cigarette smokers. Stickland and his team described that compressed timeline as alarming.

A Researcher’s Personal Concern

Stickland, who has two teenage children, said the data affected him beyond his professional role. As a result, he called for continued investigation rather than waiting for longer-term findings.

These are real physiological changes in people at the start of their adult lives. Consequently, the long-term implications deserve serious attention.

Larger Study Now Under Way

The University of Alberta team is now expanding its work in partnership with the University of British Columbia. Together, the two institutions will run a larger three-year study tracking e-cigarette use and lung function over time. In addition, researchers will examine pulmonary blood flow to better understand what drives the vaping lung damage observed so far.

Overall, the findings add to a growing body of evidence that e-cigarettes carry real costs for the body. Young people, parents, and public health communicators would therefore be wise to treat this research not as preliminary noise but as an early warning worth acting on.
