Deputies within the department reported that the overdose left lasting emotional scars, shaking morale and professional trust. Some colleagues required therapy, with one supervisor stating, “I’ve sat and I’ve wondered continuously about is there something I missed?” as reported by Sacramento Bee. The overwhelming sentiment was that Morales’s prolonged drug use compromised the unit’s integrity and tarnished public trust.

Following these revelations, the department recommended Morales’s termination. He instead resigned in early 2024, later surrendering his peace officer certification. Morales issued an apology, expressing remorse for the stress caused to his peers and the institution.
