Attorney General Pam Bondi and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced a major illicit vape crackdown in Bensenville, Illinois, where federal agents seized 600,000 units of illegal vaping products in the largest of several coordinated raids across six states on Wednesday.

Multi-State Operation Targets Dangerous Products

The joint operation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) targeted five distributors and nine retailers with civil enforcement action. The ATF, working with the US Marshals Service, executed raids in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, and North Carolina.

The Department of Justice targeted distributors and retailers allegedly selling banned vaping products, including illegally flavoured vapes, THC-infused vapes, and products containing 7-OH, an illegal compound with opioid-like effects derived from kratom plants. Youth-Targeted Products from China

Bondi stated that many of these products are being illegally imported from China, specifically targeting children, young adults, university students, and military personnel. “Chinese companies are making millions off these products,” she said, emphasising that “these illegal and unregulated products are not safe.”

Kennedy highlighted that the packaging of some Chinese products was “designed to attract young people,” noting the irony that such products are banned within China itself. The FDA has consistently warned that flavoured vapes not approved by the agency pose health risks by potentially encouraging youth tobacco use.

Legal Foundation for Enforcement

The illicit vape crackdown follows the US Supreme Court’s April decision upholding the ban on sales of flavoured vapes not approved by the FDA. This ruling strengthened federal authority to combat unauthorised vaping products entering the American market.

In August, Bondi directed the ATF to proceed with the planned operation after Kennedy identified illicit vaping products shipped from China as a Health Department priority. “The Department of Justice will use every legal measure to stop” these sales, Bondi declared at Wednesday’s news conference.

The raids occurred just two days after the Department of Homeland Security announced “Operation Midway Blitz” in Chicago, targeting undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes.

We have a government here that does not want to cooperate with President Trump.” The administration has repeatedly threatened to send the National Guard to combat crime in the city, though Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, both Democrats, say such intervention is neither wanted nor needed.
