Dr Ezard will share findings from a meticulously conducted randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The trial investigated the efficacy of 250mg daily doses of lisdexamfetamine versus placebo. It involved 164 adults battling methamphetamine dependence across six outpatient clinics in Australia. Despite challenges, such as nearly 43% of participants prematurely dropping out due to disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, the study revealed notable outcomes.

Those in the lisdexamfetamine group reported nine fewer days of methamphetamine use over the course of 12 weeks, coupled with greater self-reported satisfaction and treatment effectiveness. However, these improvements weren’t sustained in the final four weeks, highlighting complexities in treatment outcomes. These results align with the latest ASAM guidelines on considering prescription stimulants for methamphetamine treatment under specialist supervision.

Dr Nadine Ezard, a leading expert in addiction medicine, brings over three decades of clinical and research experience. Moreover, Dr Ezard serves as the Director of the National Centre for Clinical Research on Emerging Drugs (NCCRED) and the Clinical Director of the Alcohol and Drug Service at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney. In these roles, she has consistently driven innovation in treating substance use disorders. Additionally, her worldwide recognition as a researcher highlights her expertise in crafting harm-reduction interventions. Furthermore, she has excelled in developing models of care tailored to support vulnerable populations.
