The UK government has introduced a new smoking ban that will progressively raise the legal age for purchasing cigarettes by one year every year. This means that individuals born on or after January 1, 2009, will never legally be able to buy cigarettes. The law aims to create a smoke-free generation, significantly reducing smoking rates among young people.

The Tobacco and Vapes Bill, included in The King’s Speech, also brings new restrictions on vaping. It is estimated to save the UK £17 billion annually, considering the economic costs of smoking-related health issues and lost productivity. Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Witty supports the move, noting that a smoke-free country will prevent numerous health problems. The bill will also introduce new regulations on the flavours, packaging, and display of nicotine products to prevent them from appealing to children.
