Mike Trace, CEO of Forward Trust, outlined in his latest vlog the pressing issues surrounding drug policies in the UK as the new Labour government inherits a 10-year strategy implemented in 2021. Despite its ambitions to reduce drug use, deaths, and crime, challenges persist, with drug-related deaths and crime rates remaining alarmingly high. Trace called for bold action and accountability to reverse these troubling trends.
He highlighted key failures, including rising drug-induced deaths—over 6,000 in the past year alone—and the thriving drug market within prisons. Trace criticised political hesitation in adopting impactful measures and stressed the need for policies that prioritise public health and recovery. Strategies like enhanced outreach, better treatment access, and innovative solutions such as drug consumption rooms and testing were debated, as well as the importance of fostering long-term recovery for those battling addiction.
Trace also urged clarity in the government’s goals, advocating for a clear commitment to help individuals achieve control over their lives and full recovery. With Labour’s ministers expected to review the existing strategy, he expressed cautious optimism for a refreshed approach that puts people and communities first. He emphasised the need for immediate action to rebuild neglected systems and address the deep-rooted issues perpetuating the crisis.
The Forward Trust remains committed to supporting individuals and shaping an effective, compassionate policy framework. However, Trace warned that without serious political determination, the UK may continue to see the devastating impact of addiction on its society.
