In Florida, a political clash has emerged between Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis over Amendment 3, a ballot initiative aiming to legalise recreational marijuana for adults. Trump, despite his past political rivalry with DeSantis, has expressed support for the measure, indicating he would vote in favour. On the other hand, DeSantis, who is heavily invested in opposing the amendment, argues it would create a monopoly for the state’s well-established medical marijuana industry and lead to public consumption without repercussions.

The Republican Party in Florida finds itself divided, with most state Republicans aligning with DeSantis’ opposition to the amendment, while a few, including former state Sen. Jeff Brandes and state Sen. Joe Gruters, privately or publicly support it. Gruters, an ally of Trump, has openly backed the amendment, appearing in campaign ads advocating for its passage.

Amendment 3’s proponents assert that its approval would allow Florida’s 25 state-licensed medical marijuana companies to expand into the recreational market, significantly impacting the industry. The measure requires 60% voter approval to pass, and supporters are optimistic, referencing polls that show substantial backing even among Republicans.
