The Power of Non-Drinkers: Transforming Social Scenes and Hospitality

The influence of non-drinkers is reshaping social dynamics and challenging the hospitality sector to evolve. With 16% of Britons identifying as non-drinkers – more than double the number of vegetarians – the sober lifestyle is becoming a significant cultural force. No longer confined to “Dry January”, many are making sobriety a year-round commitment.

This shift affects how social outings are planned. A recent survey highlights that two-thirds of UK adults report their teetotalling friends influence the choice of venues when meeting up. The demand for inclusive options is prompting restaurants, bars and pubs to rethink their offerings. While nearly all venues provide alcohol-free (AF) drinks, the choices often fall short, with only 17% offering non-alcoholic wine and just 33% featuring AF cider.

Non-drinkers face obstacles such as limited alcohol-free selections and a lack of visibility of AF options on menus or websites. This can make planning nights out challenging, despite non-drinking accounting for one in three visits to venues. Though the market for alcohol-free spirits and other beverages is growing, the social sector still has room to better serve this expanding demographic.

For venues, catering to this shift isn’t just necessary; it’s a missed opportunity if ignored. Increasing AF options and making them more accessible could help tap into this rising wave of sober consumers who are reshaping how we experience social gatherings.
