A new academic title is quietly reframing how we understand one of the world’s leading causes of death. The Physics of Blood Flow and Cardiovascular Disease, published in June 2026 by Michael K. Akindeju, argues that where cardiovascular disease forms in the body is not a matter of chance. It is governed by the physics of how blood moves. And while its stated focus is engineering and biology, its central idea casts a sharp and sobering light on the connection between drug use and heart health.
An Engineer’s View of the Heart
Cardiovascular disease is usually explained through risk factors such as genetics, diet, and blood pressure. Akindeju’s contribution is to look beneath those markers at something more physical. The shape of a blood vessel decides how blood moves through it, that movement creates forces against the vessel walls, and the living cells lining those walls respond to the forces they feel. Where the flow turns rough or stalls, disease takes hold. It is an account that explains why conditions such as atherosclerosis and aneurysm appear in predictable places rather than at random, and it frames the vessel as a living system in constant conversation with the blood passing through it.
When Drugs Disrupt the Flow
While its focus is the mechanics of the vascular system rather than substance use, once you understand cardiovascular disease as a problem of flow, the danger of drugs comes into focus with unusual clarity. Few things disrupt the physics of blood flow as violently as substance use, and the link between drug use and heart health deserves far more attention than it receives.
Stimulants are the clearest example – Cocaine and methamphetamine drive blood pressure sharply upward and force blood vessels to constrict, narrowing the channel through which blood must pass. Seen through that lens, drug use is a body pushed past its limits. Walls stiffen and thicken, plaque builds in the disturbed zones, and weakened sections can balloon into aneurysms. Damage that might otherwise take decades can arrive in a fraction of the time. It is why heart attacks and strokes turn up in young, otherwise healthy people, lives cut short or permanently changed long before anyone expected the heart to be at risk. Other substances apply their own pressure to the same system, from the strain alcohol places on the heart to the slow vascular cost of long-term tobacco use.
Why Prevention is the Strongest Defence
Akindeju’s work points hopefully towards a future of personalised, flow-based medicine that could one day detect and reshape danger before it becomes disease. That future is worth pursuing but it does not change the most reliable protection available today.
Damage done to the vascular system is often permanent, vessel scarred, stiffened, or weakened by repeated chemical assault does not simply recover. This is why, when it comes to drug use and heart health, prevention will always outperform repair. The strongest defence is never starting, and supporting young people to live free of the substances that turn the body’s own flow against it.
The physics is unforgiving – the prevention message could not be clearer.
