Kelly Turner’s son was just 18 years old when he attended a truck meet in rural Georgia. The young man had never used drugs before. He was looking forward to his senior year of high school after COVID-19 shutdowns disrupted his education. His family enjoyed close bonds, spending weekends camping and sharing outdoor adventures together. Graduation plans and the anticipation of a new grandchild filled their conversations with hope and excitement.
At the truck meet, someone offered him a Delta-8 THC vape pen. He accepted, thinking he understood what he was trying. “He thought, OK, this is just, you know, marijuana,” Kelly explained. He took three hits from the vape pen while with his best friend.
The Emergency
Within five minutes of vaping, the teenager left the gathering to make curfew. While driving, he immediately recognized that something had gone terribly wrong. He felt faint and sensed he might lose consciousness. Demonstrating remarkable presence of mind, he pulled over to the side of the road. His best friend called Kelly while her son simultaneously dialed 911, telling the dispatcher he felt unwell and needed urgent help.
When Kelly and her husband reached the scene, they found their son in a critical state. He was hallucinating. His blood pressure had skyrocketed. His heart rate had climbed to nearly 200 beats per minute. Paramedics informed the parents that their son’s life hung in the balance. He was entering cardiac arrest and approaching the danger zone for a stroke.
“We couldn’t get in the back of the ambulance because he was no longer a minor, and were told to tell him to hold on, to hang on, and remind him how much he was loved,” Kelly recalled.
The ambulance raced to the hospital with lights flashing and sirens wailing. Kelly remained in shock. Neither she nor her husband had ever heard of Delta-8 before that night. At the hospital, doctors informed them that their son had stabilized but faced a very difficult recovery ahead. Toxicology results showed Delta-8 as the only drug in his system, though present in extremely high amounts. Three hits from a vape pen had triggered unfathomable suffering that would last for the rest of his life.
Permanent Consequences
The drug caused severe damage to the young man’s brain. He survived the initial medical crisis, but the aftermath proved devastating. “His brain, absolutely, his thought processing absolutely changed. He became very fearful of life of he thought he was going to die with everything that he did If he got up to take a shower, if he went to the bathroom, if he got up out of his bed,” Kelly explained.
Today, Kelly’s son lives with permanent brain damage and severe agoraphobia. His sense of self has been fractured. The high-achieving athlete who once looked forward to his future now spends years unable to leave his house. He missed his senior milestones. He could not attend his sister’s wedding. Even simple family outings for ice cream became impossible.
“I prayed to God that night in the hospital,” Kelly recalls, “just leave him with us in any form. But we’re still grieving the son and the life we had before.”
Understanding Delta-8 THC
Delta-8 THC is a hemp-derived psychoactive substance that can be easily purchased at gas stations and vape shops. Despite being widely available, the compound poses serious health risks. Legal loopholes and aggressive marketing have made products containing Delta-8 accessible to young people across the country.
The Turner family’s experience reflects a broader pattern. In 2021 alone, national poison hotlines logged over 660 adverse reactions to Delta-8. Emergency rooms have reported growing numbers of cannabis-induced heart emergencies. New research continues to reveal the serious dangers associated with high-potency THC products.
The Scientific Evidence
A landmark 2025 meta-analysis published in Heart found that marijuana users face nearly double the risk of dying from heart disease compared to non-users. The research revealed that daily users carry a 29% higher risk of acute coronary syndrome, including heart attacks. Stroke risk increases by 42% among users, even those under 50 years old. These cardiovascular dangers persist regardless of how the substance is consumed, whether smoked, vaped, or eaten as edibles.
Additional studies have shown that both chronic smoking and edible consumption of THC damage the lining of blood vessels. These effects mirror the damage observed in long-term tobacco users. THC rapidly increases both heart rate and blood pressure, placing excessive strain on the cardiovascular system. For healthy adults, these effects can prove disastrous. For teenagers and individuals with underlying health concerns, the risks become amplified and potentially catastrophic, as the Turner family’s case demonstrates.
A Mother’s Mission
Kelly Turner has channeled her grief into advocacy work. She now dedicates herself to warning other families about the dangers of Delta-8 and similar products. “This can happen to any family. One decision, one time, can change your child’s life forever. We need real education, real regulation, and to finally put kids’ health above industry profit,” she states.
Her message resonates as scientific evidence continues to mount. For parents, policymakers, and anyone who believes marijuana poses no serious health risks, the cardiovascular research tells a different story. The Turner family’s experience serves as a stark reminder that a single moment of experimentation can result in permanent, life-altering consequences.
The story underscores an urgent need for better education about the real dangers of Delta-8 THC and stricter regulation of products marketed to young people. As Kelly Turner’s advocacy work demonstrates, protecting children from these substances requires putting their health and safety above commercial interests.
