Alcohol consumption can have varying effects on your body depending on the amount you drink. Experts generally advise that women should have no more than one drink a day, while men can have up to two. Exceeding these limits increases the risk of short-term dangers like falls and car crashes and long-term health issues such as heart disease and liver damage.
Heavy drinking, defined as eight or more drinks a week for women and 15 or more for men, can result in significant health problems. It can shrink your brain, affecting cognitive functions, memory, and movement control. Alcohol also disrupts sleep patterns, leading to poor-quality rest, nightmares, and frequent bathroom trips. Additionally, it irritates the stomach lining, causing nausea, vomiting, ulcers, and gastritis. Chronic alcohol use can result in diarrhoea, heartburn, dehydration, and severe kidney and liver damage, including cirrhosis.
