School Resource Officer Carter Brown encounters these cannabis vape pens almost daily. Furthermore, he doesn’t mince words about what he finds. Students tuck them into pockets and hide them in bags. Sometimes they conceal marijuana vape pens in places that would shock most parents.

“We find them in pockets. They have been in underwear. They’ve been in all crevices of the body,” Brown said. Clearly, students go to extreme lengths to hide these devices.

What started as an occasional discovery has become routine in Gaston County Schools. Additionally, over the past five years, THC vape pens have quietly infiltrated school grounds. They bring problems that extend far beyond simple rule-breaking.

From Possession to Violence: The THC Vape Pen Crisis Escalates

Consequently, the real concern isn’t just that students have these devices. It’s what happens because of them. Captain Matt Hensley with the Gaston County Police Department has watched the situation evolve. Minor infractions have turned into something far more serious.

“What we’re seeing is the prevalence of these vape pens in schools over the past five years or so,” Hensley explained. However, possession is only part of the story.

Cannabis vape pens have been linked to fights and suspensions. In some heartbreaking cases across North Carolina, they’ve been connected to deadly violence. Last December, two separate incidents turned fatal. Both were connected to disputes over vaping devices. Specifically, there was a stabbing at North Forsyth High School in Winston-Salem. There was also a robbery at Mazeppa Park in Mooresville.

“It’s sad, and it’s useless, you know, to see people get hurt, and for lives to be lost over vape pens. It’s kind of hard to fathom,” Hensley said.

Why Schools Struggle to Detect Cannabis Vape Pens

Meanwhile, the challenge facing schools isn’t just about enforcement. It’s about detection. Even schools equipped with metal detectors struggle against the compact design of modern THC vaping devices.

These aren’t the bulky contraband items of previous generations. Instead, today’s marijuana vape pens are sleek and pocket-sized. They’re specifically engineered to be discreet. Some look identical to USB drives or markers. Others produce minimal vapour. Therefore, they’re nearly impossible to spot in crowded hallways.

Hensley acknowledged the practical limitations schools face. “It would be impossible to search every student,” he said. Nevertheless, he emphasised that student safety remains the top priority.

The Bigger Picture

For Officer Brown, the issue goes beyond immediate school safety. Indeed, he worries about what these early encounters with illegal substances might predict. Young people’s futures hang in the balance.

“It’s about the safety of these kids. Because if they get into, say, selling THC pens now, what does that lead to later on in life?” Brown asked.

The question hangs heavy over communities grappling with youth substance use. Cannabis vape pens might seem less serious than other drugs. However, they represent a gateway into illegal activity. They also expose students to peer pressure and potential addiction. Consequently, these devices can derail young lives before they’ve properly begun.

Legal Consequences Mount

Students caught with THC vape pens face serious repercussions on multiple fronts. Notably, possession is illegal. It carries both school disciplinary action and potential criminal charges. Those suspected of selling these devices face even harsher consequences.

Suspensions are common. Unfortunately, criminal records can follow students long after they leave school grounds. For teenagers who may not fully grasp the long-term implications, a momentary lapse creates lasting problems. These include university applications, job prospects, and future opportunities.

What Parents Can Do

Law enforcement officials stress that prevention starts at home. Similarly, Hensley and Brown encourage parents to have frank conversations with their children. These talks should cover the risks associated with marijuana vaping devices. They should also address the serious consequences that come with them.

“We want our parents to know that when they send their kids off to school in the morning, or they drop their kids off from school, that their kids are going to be safe at school, and they’re going to learn. And we’re going to do everything we can to keep violence out of our schools,” Hensley said.

Parents who suspect their children may be using or distributing THC vape pens should act quickly. Likewise, if they suspect other students are involved, they should contact authorities. School officials or local law enforcement can help. Early intervention, authorities say, can prevent situations from escalating into tragedy.

A Growing Trend

Gaston County isn’t an isolated case. In fact, schools across North Carolina report similar challenges with cannabis vaping devices. The problem reflects broader national trends in youth substance use. Traditional forms of drug consumption have been replaced. More concealable, tech-savvy alternatives have taken their place.

What makes the current situation particularly troubling is the normalisation of vaping amongst young people. Nicotine vapes have become commonplace. As a result, the line between legal (for adults) and illegal substances has blurred in students’ minds. Many don’t fully understand the reality. Possessing marijuana vape pens remains illegal.
