Runners have long chased something beyond a personal best. Ask any regular jogger about that rush of calm or euphoria mid run. Most will know exactly what you mean. Scientists call it a runner’s high, and new research is finally explaining where it comes from.

For decades, the runner’s high was pinned entirely on endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. Aerobic exercise does raise circulating endorphins. Numerous studies confirm this rise after a long run. Yet there was always a problem with this theory. Endorphins struggle to cross the blood brain barrier. This is the tightly guarded checkpoint that keeps bloodstream substances away from brain tissue. Endorphins may relieve pain elsewhere in the body, but they cannot fully explain the mental lift of a runner’s high.

What Actually Causes a Runner’s High

The real breakthrough came when researchers discovered that exercise activates the endocannabinoid system. This is the same network of receptors that responds to cannabis. Unlike endorphins, one of its key chemicals crosses the blood brain barrier with ease. That chemical is anandamide, often described as one of the brain’s own feel good compounds. It eases anxiety, reduces pain and produces a sense of calm.

A major systematic review and meta-analysis, published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, examined 33 studies covering more than a thousand participants. Across single bouts of exercise, close to three quarters of the samples showed a significant rise in anandamide. A pooled analysis of ten of these studies, involving 335 people, confirmed the effect was statistically robust. A smaller but still significant rise also appeared in a second endocannabinoid known as 2-AG.

This is the biological basis of the runner’s high. Anandamide binds to cannabinoid receptors in brain regions tied to emotion, motivation, reward and pain. The result closely resembles the classic runner’s high: less anxiety, less pain and a distinct feeling of calm.

A Team Effort, Not a Single Chemical

Endorphins have not been ruled out entirely. Modern research suggests endorphins and endocannabinoids work in tandem. The endocannabinoid system likely does more of the heavy lifting for the emotional side of things.

Other brain chemicals join in too. Dopamine reinforces the behaviour by rewarding it. It encourages the brain to repeat something it considers worthwhile. Serotonin supports emotional stability, while noradrenaline sharpens focus and alertness. Exercise also raises brain derived neurotrophic factor over time. This protein supports new brain connections and plays a part in learning and memory. It will not deliver an instant high. It may explain why regular exercisers often report steadier, longer lasting improvements in wellbeing.

Finding the Sweet Spot for a Natural High

Not every run produces a runner’s high. The research points to a clear pattern behind when it does. Moderate intensity aerobic exercise consistently produced the strongest rise in anandamide. This was more pronounced than with gentle movement or extremely intense effort. Roughly 30 minutes of continuous activity at 70 to 85 percent of maximum heart rate appears to be the sweet spot. Interestingly, one study found that pushing beyond 90 percent of maximum heart rate actually blunted the anandamide response, compared with a moderate pace.

Around two thirds of recreational runners report experiencing a runner’s high at some point. It does not happen on every outing though. Genetics, fitness level, sleep, mood and even expectation all appear to play a role.

Why This Natural High Matters Beyond the Buzz

The value of a runner’s high reaches well past the feeling itself. Prolonged, rhythmic exercise appears to quiet the brain’s default mode network. This is the collection of regions tied to self reflection and worry. At the same time, areas involved in attention and movement become more coordinated. This shift may explain the mental clarity many runners describe.

The wider research is striking for what it suggests about exercise, mood and stress. One study in the review followed adults who had experienced difficulties with substance use. A single session of moderate intensity walking lifted mood and eased cravings, alongside the expected rise in anandamide. Other studies found that exercise induced increases in endocannabinoids tracked closely with reduced pain and lower depression scores. Emotional wellbeing also improved among people managing chronic health conditions.

Crucially, the benefits are not limited to those who feel the euphoric rush. Scientists stress that even people who never experience a classic runner’s high still gain measurable improvements. Mood, cognitive performance and resilience all improve with regular physical activity. The runner’s high may grab the headlines, but the underlying neurochemical shift rewards the body and brain long after the run ends. That natural high, it seems, keeps giving well beyond the final stride.

For anyone chasing that feeling, the evidence suggests it does not require running further or harder. A brisk 30 to 60 minute session at a comfortably challenging pace, done several times a week, seems to be enough. It gives the endocannabinoid system exactly what it needs to deliver its own natural high.
