Cornwall’s only dedicated residential treatment centre for drug and alcohol dependency has reached a significant milestone, celebrating 30 years of transforming lives across the region.

Lord Lieutenant Opens Anniversary Celebrations

To mark this achievement, Bosence, located near Townshend, hosted two days of celebrations. Significantly, the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Colonel Edward Bolitho, who has served as the charity’s president for a decade, officially opened the anniversary event.

MPs and Civic Leaders Gather

On the first day, civic leaders, MPs and local partners came together, whilst the second day focused on celebrating recovery journeys. Notably, Andrew George MP (Liberal Democrat, St Ives), who played a role in Bosence’s early days, joined Perran Moon MP (Labour, Camborne, Pool and Redruth) at the celebrations. Furthermore, Mr Moon has championed the residential treatment centre in Parliament, raising its work during Prime Minister’s Questions.

Meanwhile, Hayle’s mayor, Councillor Jeremy Martin, attended alongside commissioners, sector workers and business leaders eager to understand Bosence’s vital role in Cornwall’s substance dependency support system.

Three Decades of Growth

Since 1995, when Bosence opened its doors to the first resident, the residential treatment centre has evolved significantly. Initially, the organisation began with a handful of people staying for up to 18 months. However, it now supports more than 450 individuals annually.

In addition, Chief executive Kate Prosser emphasised the importance of breaking down stigma. “For 30 years, Bosence has been a place where people can find hope and rebuild their lives. Addiction touches every family and every community in some way, and it should never be hidden in shame,” she said.

Ambitious Plans for Expansion

Looking ahead, the organisation plans ambitious expansion to increase capacity and create a modern centre of excellence for addiction recovery in Cornwall. Consequently, this vision aims to ensure more people can access support when they need it most. Additionally, the expansion will create skilled jobs and training opportunities for local people.

As the demand for services continues to grow, Bosence remains committed to serving the people of Cornwall and beyond. Ultimately, the centre offers a beacon of hope for those seeking to reclaim their lives from substance dependency.
