Republican Representative Dan Crenshaw has called for the creation of a specialised committee to tackle the growing threat of Mexican drug cartels, proposing military action against organisations like the Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels. Crenshaw, who represents Texas’ 2nd Congressional District, has urged House Speaker Mike Johnson to establish a select committee, emphasising the need for stronger authority to pass key legislation and align with President Donald Trump’s anti-cartel agenda.
The initiative comes amidst increasing cartel violence near the U.S.-Mexico border, including a recent shootout just miles from Texas. Crenshaw’s proposal is part of a broader Republican strategy to address border security and the opioid crisis. President-elect Trump has pledged to take aggressive measures against drug syndicates, including the use of special forces and cyber warfare. Key figures, such as Tom Homan as border czar, Stephen Miller as deputy chief of staff, and South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as Homeland Security Secretary, are poised to join Trump’s administration to implement the crackdown.
The push reflects heightened urgency within the GOP to confront cartel operations and address their impact on public safety in the United States.
