A study by the Pennsylvania Department of Health reveals racial disparities in access to naloxone, a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses. Black Pennsylvanians were found to be half as likely as white Pennsylvanians to receive naloxone. This comes alongside a troubling rise in Black overdose deaths between 2019 and 2021, while white overdose deaths remained stable. The reasons behind this disparity are unclear, but unequal access to treatment and fear of arrest are likely factors.
