The Pompidou Group has successfully enhanced drug prevention in Georgia capabilities through a comprehensive two-day workshop in Tbilisi, bringing together 32 psychologists and social workers from across the country. The professional development event, held on 17-18 July 2025, represents a significant milestone in strengthening Georgia’s drug prevention infrastructure.
Enhancing Professional Networks
The workshop focused on improving prevention efforts through enhanced peer-to-peer practices amongst social workers and psychologists. Furthermore, participants from state institutions and municipalities collaborated to share effective strategies and approaches, thereby creating stronger foundations for comprehensive initiatives.
Additionally, representatives from the National Agency for Crime Prevention and Probation, Juvenile Referral Centre, Office of Resource Officers, Special Penitentiary Service, and State Care Agency attended alongside colleagues from 10 local self-government bodies. Consequently, this diverse participation demonstrates the comprehensive approach that effective prevention requires.
Training and Capacity Building
Participants explored the Positive Parenting Programme, examining its objectives, structure, and evaluation results from the pilot phase. Moreover, the workshop presented ESPAD survey findings, community-based prevention approaches, and mental health considerations including professional burnout—all essential components of effective strategies.
Meanwhile, behavioural science techniques for developing change amongst vulnerable families formed a key focus, equipping professionals with practical tools for their work. As a result, these evidence-based approaches provide crucial support for children, adolescents, parents, and families facing substance-related challenges.
Regional Collaboration and Insights
Psychologists and social workers from Kutaisi, Zugdidi, and Zestaponi described the workshop as a significant professional milestone. Importantly, many participants noted this was their first opportunity to engage directly with colleagues from central government agencies and other municipalities, highlighting the importance of building professional networks.
Similarly, the regional representation underscores the nationwide scope required for effective implementation. In addition, local professionals bring invaluable community insights that enhance central policy development and service delivery.
Building Coordination Networks
State agency representatives emphasised establishing a nationwide coordination network of psychologists and social workers to strengthen prevention mechanisms. Furthermore, this network would improve coordination and referral systems between central and local levels whilst enhancing information flow and service provision.
Subsequently, professional training emerged as a priority need, with participants calling for continued development opportunities to maintain high standards. Therefore, ongoing education ensures professionals remain equipped with current best practices and evidence-based approaches.
Future Developments and Impact
The workshop demonstrates the Pompidou Group’s commitment to fostering strong partnerships and joint efforts that enhance support systems for vulnerable children and families. Moreover, this initiative forms part of the project “Strengthening the Role of Key Actors in Drug Prevention” under the Council of Europe Action Plan for Georgia (2024-2027).
These collaborative efforts position drug prevention in Georgia as a model for effective multi-agency cooperation in addressing substance-related challenges. Additionally, the workshop’s success provides a foundation for expanding professional networks and improving service delivery across the country.
Finally, the focus on vulnerable populations reflects understanding that effective prevention requires targeted support for those most at risk. Thus, by strengthening professional capabilities and coordination mechanisms, the initiative creates lasting improvements in the country’s prevention infrastructure.
