Petition Fights to Save UK’s Only NHS Detox Unit in the West

A campaign has been launched to prevent the closure of the Acer Unit, the West’s only NHS inpatient drug and alcohol detox centre, based at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, United Kingdom. The facility, set to shut its doors on 31 March, provides specialised medical care for adults struggling to control substance use.

The planned closure has sparked concern among campaigners, with petition organiser Steve Rice emphasising its vital role in saving lives with professional support. Former patient Simon Roche, who credits the unit with saving his life, called the closure a “loss of hope” for those desperate for help.

Currently funded by Bristol City Council, the unit’s contract ends on 1 April, with future detox services transitioning to charity Turning Point and the Bristol Drug Project. Critics argue that relocating care could deprive the region of essential NHS-trained experts capable of treating severe cases.

Dr Tim Williams, who previously managed the unit, warned that only four similar centres remain across England. Meanwhile, campaigners highlight the need to preserve lifesaving inpatient facilities to better protect individuals, families, and communities.
