California is introducing a new law aimed at easing the expansion of addiction treatment within hospitals. Assembly Bill 2376, signed on 30 September 2024, will allow hospitals to convert existing beds into spaces dedicated to chemical dependency recovery services. Importantly, this can be done with minimal regulatory hurdles, as institutions will only need to apply for bed conversion. The law also enables the use of evidence-based medication for addiction treatment, signalling a strong push towards modern recovery methods.

Set to take effect on 1 January 2025, the framework aims to streamline the process for hospitals to provide much-needed addiction recovery services. To ensure smooth implementation, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) will issue an All Facilities Letter (AFL) outlining the specific requirements under the new legislation.

The move comes as a response to growing demand for addiction treatment across the state. By simplifying regulations and maximising existing resources, the law hopes to address gaps in care and improve recovery outcomes for individuals struggling with chemical dependency.
