Speaking in interviews and recounting his story in his memoir, Heartbreaker, Campbell revealed efforts to confront Petty about his drug use during the 1990s would have ended in failure. Petty’s strong-willed nature, Campbell explained, meant he resisted interference. The band also had an unspoken agreement to separate personal issues from their creative work.

Petty initially kept his battle with addiction hidden for years. However, this changed with the publication of Warren Zanes’ biography, Petty, where he openly described his struggles. In the book, Petty referred to this period as a dark and painful chapter. Moreover, he admitted that his repeated attempts to quit on his own were ultimately unsuccessful. Professional help, combined with the unwavering care of his wife, Dana, eventually enabled him to break free from addiction. However, Petty hesitated to speak widely about his drug use. Unfortunately, Tom Petty’s drug use once again returned to the public eye in 2017. At that time, the iconic rock star tragically passed away at the age of 66. His death, which shocked fans worldwide, was ruled an accidental overdose involving fentanyl and other prescription drugs. Notably, Petty had been using these medications to manage the intense pain of a fractured hip and other health conditions.

Campbell expressed his enduring grief over the loss of his friend and bandmate.
