Marie Hobden, a midwife and lactation consultant with over 15 years of experience, shares her observations on the role of alcohol in family violence. Working across the UK, US, and Australia, Marie noted that alcohol was a consistent contributing factor to violence in communities. She recalls several incidents where alcohol-fueled aggression within hospital environments posed significant risks to women, children, and staff. The easy access to alcohol exacerbates these dangers, highlighting the need for stricter regulations.

Marie advocates for policies prioritising the health and wellbeing of women and children over the interests of alcohol companies. With Australian data showing alcohol involvement in 23% to 65% of police-reported family violence incidents, the call for action is urgent. By including the prevention of gender-based and family violence as a primary goal in liquor acts, governments can better protect vulnerable populations and reduce alcohol-related harms.
