Social media platforms are exposing minors to marijuana advertisements, raising alarms about the marijuana advertising impact on youth. A study reveals that these ads, crafted with vibrant imagery, food themes and youthful personas, entice teenagers to engage with cannabis products. Despite federal restrictions on broadcasting marijuana ads, loopholes allow aggressive cannabis marketing influence on teens via digital platforms.

Experts warn of significant developmental risks linked to teen cannabis use, including impaired memory, cognition, and brain growth. Dr Megan Moreno, a leading paediatrician, emphasised that these impacts might persist even after abstinence.

Alarmingly, more than 26% of 12th graders admitted to cannabis use in the past year. A related study from BRITE Youth indicated that “One in three youth in states with legal recreational marijuana engage with marijuana brands on social media” (BRITE Youth). The use of colourful packaging and flavours, along with themes tied to sports or a healthy lifestyle, makes cannabis products dangerously appealing to underage audiences. Reports also show accidental ingestion of cannabis edibles among young children soaring, with packaging closely mimicking popular sweets and snacks.

Research director Alisa Padon highlights regulators’ inaction, making it “the wild west” of marijuana advertising impact on youth. She urges stricter policies to protect minors, suggesting measures such as higher taxation on marijuana to make it less accessible to teenagers. Some authorities have imposed limitations on billboard and storefront advertising, but social media remains largely unregulated.

With cannabis use legalised in more regions, there’s growing concern about the unchecked cannabis marketing influence on teens. Strenuous efforts are needed to prevent the normalisation of marijuana among youth, ensuring the safe and healthy development of the next generation.
