A major crackdown on smoking, vaping, and the sale of energy drinks has been announced by the new Government. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s plan includes a ban that will prevent anyone born on or after January 1, 2009, from ever buying cigarettes, aiming to create a smoke-free generation. The proposed Bill also targets vape marketing, restricting kid-friendly flavours like bubble gum and candy floss, and aims to cut down on flashy packaging that appeals to young people.

The King’s Speech outlined additional measures, including a ban on the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks to minors. Drinks containing more than 150mg of caffeine per litre will be banned from sale to individuals under 16. Health experts welcomed the crackdown, highlighting its potential to reduce smoking-related diseases and improve public health. The World Health Organisation has labelled energy drinks a “danger to public health,” citing their high sugar and caffeine content.
