Industrialisation Spurs Growth in Cocaine Production Post-FARC

The Colombian peace process, which successfully ended decades of conflict with the FARC, has had an unintended consequence: a significant increase in cocaine production. According to the 2024 World Drug Report from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, the post-war environment facilitated the industrialisation of cocaine production, leading to lower prices and greater involvement from various groups in the cocaine trade. This industrialisation has significantly contributed to the drug’s growing popularity.

Angela Me, head of social affairs at the Office on Drugs and Crime, highlighted the surge in cocaine demand during an interview. She also discussed the broader impacts of cannabis legislation, indicating that changes in drug policies can have far-reaching effects on global drug markets. The report underscores the complexity of addressing drug-related issues in the context of shifting political and social landscapes.
