New data reveals concerning growth in illegal vape hotspots across Britain, with authorities confiscating 1.2 million black market vapes in 2024. Valued at £9 million, these seizures mark a 44% increase compared to last year. This widespread issue defies the Government’s impending disposable vape ban and highlights the rapid escalation of illicit trade.

Key Areas Impacted by Illegal Vapes

Hillingdon emerged as the epicentre of vape seizures, with 484,954 devices confiscated in 2024—up 116% from 2023. Its proximity to Heathrow Airport has established the borough as a key entry point, accounting for 40% of all UK seizures. Essex followed with 333,600 vapes seized—an explosive 14,000% increase—while Liverpool ranked third with 29,180 confiscations, advancing by nearly 50% year-on-year. Renfrewshire in Scotland and Newport in Wales were also flagged for significant confiscations.

Growing Health Concerns and Call for Action

Illegal vapes often exceed nicotine limits or contain unregulated, toxic chemicals, linked to severe health effects such as collapsed lungs and fainting. Shockingly, even children as young as four have fallen victim to these products, with NHS England reporting a 733% surge in youth vaping-related hospital admissions since 2020. Industry leaders are calling for a retailer licensing system, warning that prohibition alone fuels the booming black market vapes trade.

Disposable vapes remain popular among children due to their low prices, often as cheap as £3, making them easily accessible. Stemming this tide and safeguarding public health requires coordinated efforts and stronger enforcement of regulations to combat Britain’s illegal vape crisis.
