A recent report from the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA) explores the complex relationship between economic recessions and illicit drug use. The study, titled “The impact of economic recessions on the use of illicit drugs,” points to young people and socioeconomically vulnerable groups as being particularly affected during economic downturns. Though the effects of economic recessions on alcohol and tobacco use are well-documented, the impact on illicit drug use requires more research. The report, based on 25 studies mainly from Europe and the United States, suggests that cannabis use may increase among teens and young adults during recessions, while riskier drug use patterns, such as transitioning from smoking to injecting drugs, might become more prevalent.

The EUDA emphasises the critical need to monitor drug use among young people during economic hardships and calls for additional research to better understand these dynamics. The findings, although varied, contribute to a deeper understanding of how economic conditions influence drug use and could enhance Europe’s ability to address emerging health and security risks.
