Health Experts Urge Labour to Reintroduce Tobacco and Vapes Bill

In an open letter, over 1409 doctors, academics, nurses, and other health professionals have urged the Labour government to prioritise the reintroduction of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill. This bill, which was previously supported by Labour in opposition, aims to implement stricter regulations on vaping products and further tobacco control measures to move towards a smoke-free Britain. The health professionals emphasise that smoking remains the leading cause of preventable deaths and contributes significantly to the life expectancy gap between rich and poor.

The letter highlights the substantial financial burden smoking imposes on the UK, costing the economy an estimated £55 billion in 2023 due to healthcare costs, social care expenses, and lost productivity. Previous Labour initiatives, such as the Smoking Kills plan, had driven significant reductions in smoking rates, and the reintroduction of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill is seen as crucial for continuing this progress. The signatories call for immediate action to prevent vapes from being marketed to children while ensuring they remain accessible for adults trying to quit smoking.
