Half of All Murders in England and Wales Drug-Related for Fifth Consecutive Year

New data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveals that drug-related murders made up at least half of all homicides in England and Wales over the past five years. From April 2019 to March 2024, drugs were linked to 1,640 of the 3,062 murders committed. Last year, these drug-linked homicides accounted for 56 per cent of all murders, the highest proportion recorded in the last decade.

The ONS highlights the strong connection between violent crime and drug dependency. Between April 2021 and March 2024, authorities identified nearly one in three murder suspects as known drug dealers, while almost half were drug users. Authorities found that 49 per cent of victims directly used or sold drugs.

David Spencer, Head of Crime and Justice at Policy Exchange, underscored the urgent need for stricter measures, stating that authorities must take firm action against gangs and dealers driving these crimes. Meanwhile, the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) highlighted the wider implications of drug decriminalisation, calling for a reinforced law enforcement role to combat illegal substance use. Their recent report noted a record 5,448 drug-related deaths in 2023, an 84 per cent rise over the past decade, stressing the devastating human cost of this crisis.

CSJ Deputy Policy Director Sophia Worringer criticised liberal approaches to drug control, emphasising that easing restrictions has not curbed drug-linked homicides or related deaths worldwide.

North Wales Success Offers Hope

However, some areas are making progress. A multi-agency initiative in North Wales is disrupting organised crime and offering support to addicts. Police operations targeting drug gangs in Rhyl West have led to 35 raids, 180 arrests, and a 14 per cent reduction in local crime since April. Chief Superintendent Owain Llewellyn praised the results but acknowledged the need for sustained efforts to maintain pressure on those harming communities.

Drugs directly account for 56% of murders in England and Wales, according to new figures. Tackling drug-linked homicides demands urgent, increased action.
