North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has signed a new law banning the sale of synthetic opioids, often referred to as “gas station heroin,” in convenience stores and gas stations across the state. This legislation targets products like tianeptine, a drug that mimics the effects of opioids but is sold legally under various brand names. The ban aims to curb the growing abuse of these substances, which have been linked to numerous health crises and addiction issues.

Law enforcement and health officials have applauded the move, emphasising that it will help protect the public from the dangers of unregulated and potentially deadly substances. By removing these products from easily accessible locations, the state hopes to reduce the incidence of addiction and overdose, particularly among young people who may be more likely to encounter these drugs in casual settings.
