Georgia is ramping up efforts to combat the deadly fentanyl crisis ahead of its 2025 legislative session. Highlighting the urgency of addressing rising overdose deaths, Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones has called for increased funding for law enforcement to target drug traffickers and street gangs.

He emphasised, “Austin’s Law will help save the lives of Georgians by fighting back against the criminals that traffic these deadly substances. Actions have consequences, and in Georgia traffickers will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law” (Lieutenant Governor of Georgia). This pivotal legislation, passed earlier this year, makes it a felony to distribute substances laced with fentanyl, introducing severe sentences ranging from 10 to 30 years or life in prison. Lawmakers hope these tougher penalties will deter the distribution of dangerous drugs such as fentanyl, methamphetamine, and heroin.

Lieutenant Governor Jones stated, “Today, the Georgia General Assembly made a tremendous step in combatting the fentanyl crisis in our state. I am grateful for the support of Governor Kemp and the hard work of Senator Russ Goodman in crafting this vital legislation” (Senate Press). With the upcoming 40-day session under the gold dome, Georgia’s lawmakers plan to confront not only drug-related challenges but also broader issues such as healthcare, mental health, and public safety, aiming to safeguard communities from the devastating impacts of these illicit drugs.
