FTC Cracks Down on Candy-Like Cannabis Products

Candy-Like Cannabis Products

Federal agencies have issued cease-and-desist letters to cannabis retailers selling THC-infused products that resemble popular snacks and candies, citing a risk to children’s health. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are targeting companies like Hippy Mood and Mary Janes Bakery Co. for marketing products that could be mistaken for regular treats. This action comes amid rising paediatric hospitalisations due to accidental marijuana ingestion, with children mistaking these products for candy.

In response, New York legislators are pushing for laws requiring child-resistant packaging for cannabis products. Dr. Molly Boyd from Albany Med highlights the increase in paediatric marijuana intoxication cases, emphasising the need for parents to communicate with medical personnel if they suspect their child has ingested THC. Boyd also suggests that cannabis users should store products safely away from children and opt for less appealing packaging to prevent accidental consumption. The ongoing debate underscores the importance of balancing cannabis accessibility with child safety.
