From Rock Bottom to Redemption: Ex-Boxer's Transformational Journey

Former heavyweight boxer Neil Kirkwood has shared his remarkable story of overcoming a 20-year battle with alcoholism and obesity. At his lowest point, the 55-year-old from Barnsley was drinking three bottles of vodka daily, weighed nearly 40 stone (254kg), and faced a dire warning from his doctor that “one more drink” could end his life. Determined to survive, Kirkwood embarked on a gruelling path to sobriety, shedding over 20 stone (127kg) in just 12 months.

Motivated by his partner, grandchildren, and a desire to return to the ring, the boxer adopted a disciplined fitness regime that included gym classes, strength training, and swimming. Today, he has been sober for a year, weighs just over 19 stone (120kg), and is preparing for his first fight in over two decades, set for April next year.

Kirkwood reflected on his toughest battle—not in the ring, but against alcohol, depression, and weight. Sharing his story, he urged others struggling with addiction to seek help, saying, “It’s never too late. If I can do it, anybody can.” His inspiring comeback serves as a powerful reminder that with determination and support, transformation is possible.
