Former President Donald Trump has declared his intention to “save vaping” in a recent post on Truth Social, a move that contrasts with his earlier stance as president when he supported banning flavoured vaping products. During his administration in 2020, a limited ban was imposed on mint and fruit-flavoured cartridge-based e-cigarettes, although not all vaping products were affected. This followed a 2019 announcement where Trump faced criticism for proposing a comprehensive ban on all flavoured vape products.
The issue of flavoured vaping products remains contentious. In December 2023, the World Health Organization called for their ban, aiming to deter e-cigarette uptake and combat nicotine addiction. Concurrently, the US Food and Drug Administration has been active, forming a task force to curb the distribution of illicit electronic cigarettes. Despite this, the FDA authorised the first non-tobacco flavoured electronic cigarettes for adult smokers, suggesting a belief in their potential to reduce traditional cigarette smoking.
Adding to the complexity, the Supreme Court is set to hear a case this year regarding the FDA’s marketing denial to two companies selling flavoured tobacco vaping products, highlighting ongoing legal debates over vaping regulation.
