Florida's Cannabis Legalisation Campaign Heavily Backed by One Company

In Florida, the campaign to legalise recreational marijuana is primarily funded by Trulieve, a major medical cannabis distributor, which has contributed over $92 million to the Smart & Safe Florida political committee. This committee is advocating for the passage of Amendment 3, a measure on the November ballot that would allow adults over 21 to use cannabis for personal, non-medical purposes. Amendment 3 requires 60% voter approval to pass and could potentially generate significant tax revenue, projected between $195 and $431 million, benefiting public services like education and infrastructure.

Supporters, including Trulieve, argue that legalisation would provide safe access to cannabis, reduce black market risks, and boost the economy. Trulieve, which operates 156 dispensaries in Florida, sees this as a chance to expand its market presence and ensure product safety.

However, opponents, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, warn that legalisation could lead to increased public health issues and impaired driving. Critics also accuse Trulieve of attempting to monopolise the market, citing concerns over restricted competition and the amendment’s ban on home cultivation.

As voters prepare to decide on Amendment 3, the debate highlights the clash between those seeking safe access to recreational marijuana and those concerned about its risks, with the outcome poised to reshape Florida’s legislative landscape and impact the state’s economy and community health.
