Helen Spree, 61, ex-chairwoman of a prison monitoring board, is facing serious charges as part of an anti-corruption investigation tied to HMP Liverpool. Allegedly betraying her position of trust, Ms Spree has been accused of misconduct in public office, conspiring to smuggle prohibited items into prison, and supplying cannabis. It is also claimed she engaged in inappropriate relationships with prisoners. These alleged offences, dating from December 2019 to August 2021, highlight the devastating impact of illegal substances on individuals and institutions.
Ms Spree appeared at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court but did not enter a plea. Her case has been referred to Liverpool Crown Court, with a hearing set for 18 February. Authorities continue to address corrupt practices that jeopardise the safety and integrity of correctional facilities.
