Europe is preparing for a significant surge in black market synthetic opioids, largely due to the Taliban’s crackdown on opium cultivation in Afghanistan. Traditionally preferring heroin, nonmedical opioid users in Europe might soon face an influx of more potent substances like fentanyl and nitazenes. This shift is attributed to drug trafficking organisations substituting heroin with synthetic opioids, a trend initially observed in North America. The German Institute for Addiction Research warns that fentanyl could flood the German market as early as next year, citing a 95% drop in the opium poppy supply from Afghanistan.

The anticipated rise in synthetic opioid use poses severe public health challenges, including increased overdose deaths. A German AIDS help group has already detected fentanyl mixed with heroin samples, leading to a 12% increase in opioid-related deaths from 2022 to 2023. Nitazenes, another class of synthetic opioids, have also made their way into the market, causing numerous overdoses in Ireland and England.
