Joaquín Guzmán López, son of the infamous drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, sought to turn himself in to avoid a potentially violent end to his drug-trafficking career. As the financial strategist behind the Sinaloa drug cartel, which he and his brothers inherited from their father, Guzmán López played a key role in the organisation’s operations. The cartel was notorious for trafficking billions of dollars worth of fentanyl into the United States, significantly contributing to the opioid crisis affecting numerous American communities.
