Efforts to Remove the Deadly Drug from American Streets

America is grappling with a fentanyl crisis that has devastating effects on families nationwide. Cartels are smuggling this potent synthetic opioid into the country, flooding communities coast to coast. In the past year alone, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents intercepted 27,023 pounds of fentanyl, while the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) seized over 77 million fentanyl pills and nearly 12,000 pounds of fentanyl powder. This amount of fentanyl is enough to kill every American, illustrating the severe threat it poses.

Fentanyl is 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine, with just two milligrams being a lethal dose. States like Tennessee and Virginia are seeing record-high overdose deaths due to synthetic opioids. Congress is working to crack down on narcotics traffickers by targeting illicit pill presses, which often come from China and can produce thousands of counterfeit pills per hour. This multifaceted approach aims to prevent these deadly substances from being sold on American streets.
