In Colorado Springs, a robust campaign has emerged against the sale of recreational marijuana, spearheaded by notable elected officials from the region. Leading this initiative are school board presidents Parth Melpakam, Aaron Salt, and Lori Thompson, who have publicly urged voters to support ballot Question 2D, which seeks to ban retail marijuana establishments, and oppose Question 300, which would allow existing medical marijuana licensees to expand into recreational sales.
The campaign gained momentum following a mass text message sent to El Paso County voters, featuring videos of these board presidents advocating their stance. Melpakam emphasised the potential dangers of modern high-THC marijuana strains, particularly for young people, and highlighted the detrimental impact on developing brains. This marks the first public advocacy for a ballot measure by these officials, who have otherwise maintained private positions on such issues.
However, the strategy of using mass text messages has stirred controversy among community members who expressed discomfort with the unsolicited nature of the political communications. Concerns were raised about the origin of the contact information and the ethics of disseminating political opinions via mass texts. Citizens for Responsible Marijuana Regulation, a group campaigning in favour of Question 300, criticised the lack of transparency and argued for a more informed decision-making process among voters.
The Colorado Springs Safe Neighborhood Coalition, an advocacy group opposing recreational marijuana, has played a significant role in this campaign, leveraging social media platforms to disseminate their message. The group was established in 2022 and is backed by the political-action committee Colorado Dawn.
The current debate comes after a previous attempt in 2022 to bring recreational marijuana shops to the area, which didn’t succeed. As local leaders share their worries, the community is clearly divided, with each side raising valid points about public safety, economic impact, and what reflects their values. With the election coming up, many residents are taking the time to hear different views. This shows how important it is for everyone to join in discussions that will affect the future of Colorado Springs.
