A former veterinarian who ran a children’s summer camp admitted to sedating his wife with powerful tranquillisers. Jon Ruben drugged his wife so she would remain unconscious whilst he sexually assaulted children under their care.

Jon Ruben, 76, sobbed in the dock at Leicester Crown Court on Wednesday. He pleaded guilty to administering Temazepam to his wife Susan between 26 and 29 July last year. The admission came after he had already confessed to sexually assaulting two boys. He also subjected six other young victims to child cruelty at his Leicestershire holiday camp.

“I’m so sorry,” Ruben said after entering his guilty plea. His confession revealed how he had sedated his spouse to facilitate his crimes against children.

How Sedatives Enabled the Abuse of a Drugged Wife

The case has exposed how prescription medications become instruments of manipulation. Ruben operated the summer camp for at least 27 years. He demonstrated a calculated understanding of how sedating substances could render potential witnesses unconscious.

Temazepam belongs to the benzodiazepine class of drugs. This is the same class as Xanax, another sedative that featured prominently in his crimes. Prosecutor Mary Prior KC told the court that Ruben voluntarily admitted to sedating his wife during a police interview. This demonstrated the premeditated nature of his actions.

By keeping his drugged wife unconscious, the defendant created a window of opportunity. He could abuse children without fear of discovery by the person closest to him. This deliberate incapacitation of a spouse reveals how mind altering substances enable criminal behaviour.

Research shows that benzodiazepines like Temazepam can cause memory impairment and deep sedation lasting 6 to 8 hours. Ruben exploited these properties to ensure his wife would not wake during his attacks.

A Pattern of Sedating Victims Beyond His Wife

Ruben’s use of sedatives extended far beyond his drugged wife. He laced sweets with tranquillising drugs before attacking children at his camp. He played what he termed a “sweet game” with youngsters.

Eight children were hospitalised in July last year after consuming liquid Xanax hidden in confectionery. Several victims displayed classic signs of sedation. They had difficulty walking, slurred speech, and an inability to wake. Some children struggled to function the following morning. Ruben would dismiss their symptoms, telling them they were simply “overwrought.”

The systematic use of sedating medications allowed Ruben to render his victims compliant and confused. This made it difficult for them to resist or accurately report what had occurred.

Discovery and Arrest

The horrific truth emerged when Ruben’s stepson made a disturbing discovery. He found baby oil, syringes containing white powder, and other suspicious items amongst the defendant’s belongings. This discovery prompted him to raise concerns with authorities. It ultimately led to Ruben’s arrest in July last year.

During searches, police uncovered 50 category A videos. These represent the most severe classification of child abuse material. Officers also found 22 category B images. Whilst these images did not relate to children at the summer camp, they further demonstrated the defendant’s predatory behaviour.

Why Sedating a Spouse Enables Crime

This case illustrates how readily available prescription sedatives can be weaponised. Temazepam and similar benzodiazepines are legitimate medications when properly prescribed. However, they possess properties that make them attractive to perpetrators seeking to incapacitate others.

The fact that Ruben was a former veterinarian meant he likely had greater access to sedating substances. His professional background gave him the expertise to administer these medications effectively. He knew how to render both his drugged wife and his young victims unable to resist or report his actions immediately.

Statistics from the National Crime Agency indicate that drug facilitated sexual assault cases have increased by 23% over the past three years. Benzodiazepines feature in approximately 40% of these cases.

Sentencing and Charges

Judge Timothy Spencer KC told Ruben that his sentencing, scheduled for Friday, would be a “very tough day in your life.”

Ruben has pleaded guilty to multiple offences. These include sexual assault of a child under 13 and assault by penetration. He admitted eight counts of child cruelty. He confessed to three counts of making indecent images of children. He pleaded guilty to four drugs charges and administering a noxious substance to his wife.

The case serves as a stark reminder of how substances intended for therapeutic purposes can become tools of abuse. When misused, they create circumstances where vulnerable people become unable to protect themselves or others. Whether the victim is a drugged wife or a sedated child, the result is the same. They are rendered defenceless by chemicals meant to heal.
