Colum Eastwood, SDLP MLA, has intensified calls for the commitment of £1 million to support the Northlands addiction centre in Derry, a critical facility for those battling substance addiction. Addressing Westminster, Eastwood reminded the government of a promise made during the New Decade, New Approach (NDNA) negotiations to fund the development of a new addiction treatment facility in Derry.
“The people of Derry were assured that £1 million would be allocated for the redevelopment of the Northlands addiction centre,” Eastwood declared passionately. He emphasised the centre’s life-saving work, describing it as an indispensable asset for the local community and a symbol of hope for those striving to overcome addiction.
However, the pledged funding now appears uncertain. Eastwood criticised the Northern Ireland Department of Health for cutting core funding to the centre and failing to guarantee the promised financial support. These developments, he claimed, undermined the trust built through the NDNA agreement.
Westminster Debate Highlights the Need
Speaking to Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Fleur Anderson, Eastwood sought reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to the centre. He underscored the importance of addressing addiction challenges in Derry, a city significantly affected by substance misuse.
Acknowledging Eastwood’s statements, Anderson called him “a powerful advocate for his constituents and the Northlands Centre.” While she recognised the critical need for addiction treatment services, she reiterated that responsibility now rests with the Department of Health in Northern Ireland. The department, she said, must develop a robust business case to secure the funding and determine the best way to maximise these resources for widespread benefit.
A Vital Resource for Addiction Treatment in Derry
For decades, the Northlands Centre has been a lifeline for individuals and families facing the devastating impacts of addiction. Known for its compassionate approach and effective services, the centre has helped countless lives through its support programmes. However, the uncertainty surrounding its funding has raised concerns about the continuity of these essential services.
The SDLP MLA highlighted how addiction recovery services save lives every day and stressed the moral obligation to uphold commitments made to Derry’s people. Without the promised £1 million investment, plans for the centre’s redevelopment face jeopardy, potentially leaving vulnerable individuals without a critical resource to combat addiction.
