Catholic Bishops in Northern Uganda have raised serious concerns over widespread alcohol and drug abuse among the youth, citing it as a key factor fueling insecurity in the region. Speaking during the Ecclesiastical Provincial Peace and Prayer Week in Koboko Municipality, the Bishops from Lira, Arua, Nebbi, and Gulu Dioceses highlighted the growing toll of substance abuse on the youngest members of society, including mental health challenges and rising violence.
Bishop Sabino Ochan Odoki of Arua Diocese revealed steps being taken to address the crisis, including the establishment of a counselling ministry aimed at rehabilitating victims, especially vulnerable young mothers and children. Meanwhile, Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok of Lira Diocese pointed to alcohol and drug abuse as drivers of sexual violence and perpetuating cycles of insecurity.
The Bishops have called for coordinated efforts from all stakeholders to run awareness campaigns and intervention programmes targeting at-risk youth. They emphasised the urgency of promoting peace and mutual respect, particularly in conflict-stricken communities such as those of the Karamojong people in northeastern Uganda.
