America Is Growing Biologically Older. Cannabis Use and Ageing May Explain Why.
For decades, the public conversation around cannabis focused on legal status, tax revenues, and therapeutic promise. Very little attention went to the science. That science now tells a deeply troubling story. Researchers at Harvard Medical School and institutions affiliated with the National Institutes of Health have produced evidence suggesting cannabis accelerates biological ageing at a population scale. The economic consequences could dwarf anything the industry has ever generated in tax receipts.
This is not fringe commentary. It comes from peer-reviewed journals and some of the world’s most respected research laboratories.
The Numbers Are Already Alarming
The National Survey of Drug Use and Health tracks cannabis use across the United States every year. Its most recent figures show that 22.2% of Americans used cannabis in the past year. Some 15.4% used it in the past month. And 7.5% now use it on most days. That last figure matters most. Addiction researchers widely treat near-daily use as a direct measure of cannabis dependency across the general population.
The trajectory makes things worse. The rate of habitual cannabis use doubled between 2007 and 2017. It then doubled again by 2023. The doubling time shrank from ten years to five. Researchers modelling these curves project that last-year use, last-month use, and near-daily use will each pass the 50% population mark somewhere between 2049 and 2054. Those projections may already be too conservative. The growth is currently outpacing standard exponential models.
Once habitual cannabis use crosses the 50% threshold in a democratic society, the political conditions needed to reverse it become extraordinarily difficult to build. That window is narrowing fast.
How Cannabis Use and Ageing Are Biologically Linked
Every cell in the body works on two levels. The first is the genetic hardware, which is the DNA itself. The second is the epigenome, a layer of molecular machinery that controls which genes switch on and which switch off. The epigenome explains why a heart cell behaves differently from a brain cell. It also explains why young cells behave differently from old ones.
Harvard Medical School researchers have confirmed that biological ageing results directly from damage to this hardware and software. They have also shown that researchers can reverse this process in mice using cellular reprogramming techniques. Mice treated this way showed genuine biological rejuvenation, including recovery from muscle loss, cataracts, and nerve injury.
Cannabis appears to damage both systems. Scientists first documented cannabis-induced chromosomal breaks back in 1967. More recent work shows cannabis advances the cellular age of a 30-year-old human by at least 30%. Researchers also connect cannabis to mitochondrial damage, which is itself a core driver of accelerated ageing. The drug also associates with hardened arteries, immune disruption, and hormonal changes. All of these are hallmarks of biological ageing.
Cannabis use and ageing connect through another disturbing pathway: reproduction. Research groups have identified epigenetic and structural changes in both eggs and sperm following cannabis exposure. Studies in mice show these changes pass to subsequent generations, persisting for three to four generations. The fertilised egg may already carry biological age before pregnancy even begins.
A Genotoxic Drug in the Consumer Marketplace
Scientists use the term genotoxic to describe substances that damage genetic material. Regulators drop most genotoxic drugs from development the moment researchers detect that property. The thalidomide tragedy of the 1950s is the reason those safety standards exist today. Thalidomide caused birth defects across much of the western world. That experience prompted governments to build the genotoxic testing frameworks now used worldwide.
Cannabis fails those tests. All cannabinoids carry genotoxic properties. Researchers point to a compound called olivetol, found in the core structure of every cannabinoid, as the source of that toxicity.
The cannabis industry acknowledges this, at least in part. It formally advises against use during pregnancy. The United States Food and Drug Administration has issued its own warnings for those who may become pregnant. Both admissions confirm genotoxic concern at industry and government level. Yet the broader public debate remains largely absent.
Cannabis also entered the commercial market before efficacy and safety evaluations were complete. Most substances travel the opposite path. Trials come first. Cannabis reversed that sequence. The industry now funds research to find legitimate uses for a product already generating billions in retail sales.
The Financial Cost of Cannabis-Accelerated Ageing
The potential economic impact of cannabis-related accelerated ageing runs into the trillions.
The United States spends roughly $5 trillion of its $31 trillion GDP on health care each year. A 50% acceleration in biological ageing across the adult population could push that figure towards $11 trillion annually. Americans over 55 make up around 30% of the population but account for approximately 60% of health care costs. If cannabis-related accelerated ageing pushes that group’s biological age 60% higher than their chronological age, their health costs could rise three to four times. That adds an estimated $5 to $8 trillion per year to the national bill.
Against that, the cannabis industry generated $5 billion in tax revenue in 2024. Its retail market reached $31 billion. The contrast with the projected health costs speaks for itself.
Those projections also exclude the separate costs of mental health disorders, childhood developmental conditions, higher cancer rates, secondary addictions to opioids and cocaine, crime, homelessness, and reduced workforce participation. Researchers link all of these to rising cannabis use.
Cannabis Use and Ageing: A Generational Emergency
Cannabis use and ageing are not two separate public health concerns. Leading researchers now treat them as the same problem. Cannabis use at population scale may be ageing the country from the inside, not visibly or immediately, but steadily and across generations.
Epigenetic inheritance makes this especially serious. Changes to the epigenome do not necessarily end with the person who experienced them. They pass down. The consequences of today’s surge in cannabis-related accelerated ageing may compound for decades after the habit ends.
The data exists. The research is published. Scientists have made their findings available. What is missing is the political will to act before the commercial and legislative momentum of the cannabis industry makes acting genuinely difficult.
The time to have that conversation is now.
