The increase in daily cannabis use has led to a significant rise in the number of drivers under the influence of the drug, putting road safety at risk. According to a 2023 study in the International Journal of Drug Policy, the legalisation of marijuana is likely responsible for an additional 1,400 traffic fatalities in the U.S. each year. Despite this alarming statistic, many drivers remain unaware of the dangers. A 2022 survey by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that only 70% of drivers believe it is very dangerous to drive an hour after using marijuana, compared to 94% for alcohol. This gap in perception highlights the urgent need for increased awareness and education about the impairing effects of cannabis on driving.
