Cannabis Trafficking Arrest Made After Routine Traffic Stop in Southern Indiana

A 32-year-old Indiana man is now facing drug trafficking charges. Detectives found more than 42 pounds of cannabis during a traffic stop and property search in southern Indiana earlier this month.

The cannabis trafficking arrest came on 2 June. Detectives from the Evansville Vanderburgh County Drug Task Force spotted a driver speeding on Interstate 69. He was also crossing the fog line near Boonville-New Harmony Road. Officers pulled him over at around 6pm.

Drug Trafficking Charges Follow Cannabis Smell at the Vehicle

One detective reported smelling raw cannabis as he approached the car. He asked the driver, Jordan Rushing, 32, for his licence. Rushing rolled up the windows and locked the vehicle. A dog was still inside. Temperatures were around 80 degrees Fahrenheit at the time.

Authorities called Tri-State Towing to unlock the car. Animal control was also contacted to rescue the dog before the search went ahead.

Inside the boot, detectives found almost 30 pounds of cannabis packed into black bin bags. A records check then revealed that Rushing had a suspended licence. He also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest from Harrison County, Indiana.

Search Warrant Uncovers More Cannabis and Two Handguns

Detectives obtained a warrant to search Rushing’s apartment and a nearby garage. The search turned up over 12 pounds of cannabis. Officers also recovered two handguns, a digital scale, several plastic bags and more than 2,000 dollars in cash.

That combination of items points to organised supply rather than personal use. In total, more than 42.5 pounds of cannabis were seized across both locations. According to the US Drug Enforcement Administration, cannabis remains the most widely trafficked controlled substance in the country. Tens of thousands of drug trafficking charges are filed in the United States every year.

Rushing was charged with dealing more than ten pounds of cannabis and driving whilst suspended. He was booked into Vanderburgh County Jail.
