California authorities have uncovered over $120 million worth of illegal marijuana in a series of raids conducted throughout 2024. These operations, led by the state’s Unified Cannabis Enforcement Task Force, resulted in the destruction of 37 tons of illegal cannabis and the seizure of nearly 123,000 unlicensed plants. The task force, established by Governor Gavin Newsom in 2022, has intensified efforts across multiple counties, including Los Angeles, Orange, and Humboldt, targeting both urban and remote growth operations. This initiative aims to protect the state’s legal cannabis industry, which contributes billions to California’s economy, by eliminating illicit activities that undermine legitimate businesses and pose health risks to communities.

The task force’s operations have led to the execution of 309 search warrants, the arrest of 38 individuals, and the confiscation of 150 illegal firearms, with significant raids occurring in areas like California State Parks. Despite the legal status of recreational marijuana, the illegal trade persists, prompting continued enforcement actions to maintain market integrity and safety. Governor Newsom’s office emphasised the importance of these efforts in sustaining California’s position as a global economic leader while ensuring community well-being.
