Lambeth Council is making strides in addressing substance misuse in Brixton through its innovative Brixton drug support programme. A pilot outreach scheme was launched 18 months ago. It has now become a permanent fixture, directly engaging with rough sleepers and substance users. The on-street team has been instrumental in building trust. They encourage individuals to seek help, which has contributed to a significant increase in treatment engagement.

Expanding Brixton Addiction Services

Over the past year, more than 300 additional adults have entered treatment, bringing the total to just under 2,000. The Brixton addiction services initiative has played a key role in achieving this growth. A Voluntary Referrals app is now available. It enables police officers to directly connect individuals to their local substance misuse treatment services. The app streamlines the process for assessments and support.

The outreach team has already made a considerable impact. They have reduced the number of injecting drug users. They have also lowered drug-related deaths. Additionally, they have decreased anti-social behaviour linked to drugs and alcohol.

Unified Efforts in Brixton Town Centre

Cllr Dr Mahamed Hashi, Lambeth’s Cabinet Member for Safer Communities, applauded the progress made, stating, “Drug and alcohol addiction is a destructive scourge that drives crime and harms communities. Together with the police, we’re creating safer spaces while ensuring people in need can access the right support.”

Coordinated efforts between Lambeth Council, local police, and the charity Thames Reach have strengthened community-focused solutions. The on-street team operates across key areas, such as Windrush Square and Brixton Station, liaising with multiple agencies to share intelligence and expand the programme’s reach.

Thames Reach is experienced in working with Lambeth communities. The organisation also supports borough-wide initiatives aimed at tackling rough sleeping. These initiatives address issues related to drugs and alcohol.

The Brixton drug support team conducts early morning and daytime patrols. They continue to connect with individuals and understand their needs. The team provides tailored treatment support based on these needs. While challenges remain, the initiative demonstrates tangible progress towards addressing drug dependency.
