Aberdeen will welcome Scotland’s first dedicated alcohol-free bar this autumn when SOBR opens its doors on Thistle Street. The venue will offer customers a full range of non-alcoholic alternatives in a traditional bar setting.
The Vision Behind the Alcohol-Free Bar
Kate Kenyon, a 33-year-old from Turriff, Aberdeenshire, developed the concept after witnessing her best friend Isla’s transformation after giving up drinking. Moreover, Kenyon drew inspiration from similar alcohol-free bar establishments in London and the United States.
“I was so incredibly touched by Isla’s journey in becoming sober that I knew I wanted to create a space for everyone,” Kenyon explained. “We both went on this journey together and I could see her life transform in front of my eyes. She was smashing half marathons, getting promoted at work, and was just dealing with everyday pressures so much better than she ever had.”
What the Alcohol-Free Bar Will Offer
SOBR will serve alcohol-free beers, ciders, cocktails, spirits and wines. Additionally, the venue will offer non-alcoholic birthday shots, health drinks that boost energy and support detoxification, and hot beverages including coffee. Furthermore, customers can enjoy seasonal ‘theatrical’ cocktails.
The 20-seat venue aims to create an atmosphere comparable to conventional bars whilst catering specifically to those who choose not to drink.
Addressing a Gap in Social Spaces
Kenyon identified a gap in the market during social outings with her friend. Indeed, they struggled to find venues offering appealing alternatives to alcoholic drinks.
“We realised when we were out for dinner or social occasions that there weren’t great options for people who don’t drink,” Kenyon noted. “We were looking for something or somewhere that had the same appeal as going out for a cocktail does, just without being surrounded by alcohol. That’s when I began thinking seriously about SOBR.”
Opening Details
The alcohol-free bar will open on Aberdeen’s Thistle Street in October 2025. Consequently, many consider SOBR to be the first of its kind in Scotland, providing an inclusive space where people who don’t drink can participate fully in social activities.
The venue will serve customers seeking alternatives to traditional drinking establishments, whether for health reasons, personal preference, or other motivations. Therefore, SOBR represents a new option in Aberdeen’s social scene.
